Oh, there's a good Tex-Mex restaurant in Pai! It's owned by a guy from Texas, he cooks Mexican food & BBQ ribs, while his Thai wife cooks up Thai food. I forget the name, but it can't be hard to find...

Have fun in Chiang Mai! I spent a week or so there. I stayed at a backpacker place called Pun Pun Guesthouse (321 Charoenrat Road) run by an American expat named John- the sweetest man! The place was decent and clean as I recall, and John was very helpful and knowledgeable but the real bonus was the menu at their restaurant. John makes the best breakfast sandwich in Thailand- He has the sausage patties specially made fresh at the local butcher- but I swear there was crack in it too cuz I went to sleep dreaming about waking up and having another the following morning. If you happen to pay a visit please say hello for me, although I don't expect him to remember me since it was April, 2004 that I stayed there.
Hope your finger heals quickly!

I found the cold of N. Vietnam a wonderful break from the heat of Thailand. I was absolutely loving the cold rain and fog at the time, but it sounds like you're over it at this point. At least you have sun and heat just a short hop away—no such luck here in Eugene, where the rain keeps falling and falling and falling.

Be careful when a your motorbike taxi driver suddenly lets a "second passenger" on for the ride. This is how I almost had my camera stolen from me in Hanoi—I noticed my camera missing from its belt pouch, and I reached behind me as the girl was trying to shove my camera into her pocket....

Most popular way of getting around Southeast Asian cities is riding as passenger on the back of a motorcycle. Way better than a taxi and you get a free adrenaline rush. BTW, locals will often ride 2 passengers on one bike...
